Catania - Storie di Stile Peroni

Sicily‚s second-largest city rocks – sometimes, quite literally thanks to its seismic history and proximity to the smoking volcano Etna. Centuries of classic treasures and design are on display in its old town.

Indulge in style and serenity

For this discovery I took a 30 minute ride from Catania. Between the slopes of the Etna and the Mediterranean sea lays a 40 acres hideaway where the calm and amazing surroundings provide a change of scenery from the noisy city life.

Monaci delle Terre Nere is a 18th century estate which used to be owned by a noble family and maintained by the monks, roughly translated, the name’s meaning is: ‘Monks of black soil’, refering to the fertile vulcanic grounds, courtesy of Mount Etna.
The boutique hotel counts 13 rooms, spread over the main building and the property, and are all decorated with the utmost care. The interior design is eclectic, boasting a mix of the authentic building details with contemporary decoration such as art from Brazilian/British artist Olivier Mourao and modern furniture by FLOS and B&B Italia.

For some quiet time, one can settle poolside, overlooking the sea from a distance or just read a book under a tree shade and enjoy the scent of citrus and jasmine on the breeze. Needless to say that for me, Monaci delle Terre Nere reflects the best of what the Catania surroundings have to offer in order to indulge in style and serenity.
